So many cultures in the states
I think I’m third culture kid? I think it’s more common now with so many different nationalities in the USA. There’s always some kind of immigrant background. However my situation was more different, I was born in another country and my parents were both from two different countries. Then they settled in a completely different third.
That was then, this is now
When I was a child, it wasn’t so normal… and multicultural aisle at the supermarket was just El Paso Taco Shells. What is now so common is the fact that now you can go to a neighbourhood grocery store and buy products that a you would have likely seen in your home country. That’s such a cool thing.
Tips without going too far
My kids though with all this moving around they are on their 8th culture? They are still picky kids though. I really want my kids to appreciate the foods that I grew up with but also add to their own experiences. So a few tips if you can’t travel, I highly recommend going to local asian grocery store like H-Mart. I also love fun festivals with food carts and food trucks.
Kids still be picky
However I admit that my kids when they are in the US have a tendency to choose you safer foods like chicken nuggets and French fries. I find when we are out of our habitat we are all more open to different experiences. Maybe you wouldn’t eat this at home, but when you’re out there’s a better chance to try it.
my favourite tradition
My best early memories consist of my 이모 (my aunt, mom’s little sister) sneaking to a market to eat fried squid (오징어튀김). Now I have recreated these experiences with my kids at the markets all over South Korea. I hope these memories are the one that will last a lifetime and become traditions.
