Halloween 2020

Flashback to 1988

I remember growing up I wore a lot of embarrassing costumes.  Back in the day people could buy costumes at drugstores or big box stores. The costumes were made of plastic and poor quality.  So my mom did her best from what she had at home, but clearly the effort wasn’t really there. However since she was an immigrant, she didn’t understand the magnitude of having a cute/cool Halloween costume.

Korean Mom memory again

I remember my mom taking out my karate uniform and saying that I am the karate kid (insert cringe emoji).  Then there was the 2 years in row, where I wore my Korean Hanbok (all I can say is thank god I grew out of it by the 3rd year). Somehow I managed to win wearing my Korean national dress (hanbok) for the Halloween Parade (this was the 80’s obviously things weren’t so PC). Finally one year my mother put me in her mink fur jacket and I was an “eskimo” (I’m sorry to offend you with that word!). As you can tell my mom was creative but she was lazy.

baby it’s cold outside

Now as a mom I need to try to find something fun something cute something cool every year. I would love to have lived in warmer climates. That way my daughter could wear the Disney store princess costumes out without risking hypothermia.   Usually most kids who participate in Halloween activities (which occur at the end of blustery October) need to wear warmer clothes.   Either way, getting dressed up every year can be done even if you’re living in a colder climate.  What I do is buy Uniqlo heat tech undergarments and I stick them under everything for both my son and daughter. Yes, I make my boy wear tights under his jeans in winter!

look cute, reuse, no waste

So my top advice to anybody buying costumes for your kids is to always make sure that before you shop, you think ahead of time. Think of your kids, their ages (if you have enough space in between your kids to hand them down).  So that every year all you have to do is make a couple adjustments to make them look super cute.   This way you can also buy and invest more money so you can get better looking costume gear.  Buy one piece at time, year round keep it in your dress up area, and then  you’ll have no waste.

diy tips

The best DIY costume probably would involve buying a hoodie, and then taking by getting felt or any kind of fabric. Attach it either by glue gun or by just a simple stitch, from there you can make so many kinds of varieties of costumes.  Just google hoodie costumes for DIY ideas.

other easy ideas

  • You could also find cool pleather motorcycle jacket and style your kid as biker, just add gel in the hair or aviators.
  • Take a plaid flannel shirt, jeans, suspenders (bracers), some kind of boots, color in a false beard, there you are a lumberjack
  • Buy a faux fur vest or jacket with hoods outside trick or treating outside can also be a cute stylish idea because you put on a little bow tie, some headband with ears, and there you go a teddy bear or little kitten!
