Please note do to the long title, I shortened the title with acronyms. This is the Miniguide (MG) to sports photography and the Minitorial (MT) for Tennis Brights!

Beginner’s Guide to Photography Series

I get lots of questions about my photography. I feel like I am still a novice, perhaps an amateur with some experience! However I love to share my hacks with you. In the future there will be more posts about how to shoot certain styles of photos. So you wanna know how to shoot sports photography ? Let’s talk, 4 tips to get that sporty yet stylish look.

Shutter Speed

Shutter Speed, aim for 1/125-1/200 so that the picture is crisp! You should always use the fastest shutter speeds as possible when you are trying capture action. Most cameras also have a continuous shooting feature.  I often use it and then usually just keep 1 of the series

Aperture

Aperture, who doesn’t love a nice blurry background? Unfortunately sometimes that’s not possible specially when the entire photo needs to be in focus.  To make the photo have that cool bokeh type affect but still look crisp and sharp, I either focus the face or hands/feet. I love 1.8 aperture but for sports photography try above 2.8.  You can always do a lower aperture but try shooting continuously at the same time.

White balance

White balance, have you noticed that sports clothing itself is very bright?   Usually whites too! Since athleisure has become the newest thing, manually adjust the white balance in your camera so those colours look true to real life. Always remember to adjust your WB when shooting outside a studio.

lightroom

Using Lightroom to edit, to fix small mistakes… Edit colours and make a photo a sharper. We all want the colours to always pop so you can adjust and saturate certain colours in your Lightroom.  A great away to easily filter bad skin (no need for photoshop) is to illuminate the colour of model in your photograph.  Sparingly use the sharpening feature to have a more defined image. Finally set your colour noise reduction to 10-25 (don’t go over that or your photo will look bad) to quickly smooth out the entire photo.

Finally here is the completed Look!
