MiniEmbassy Editorial

The Art of the Editorial

Way back when I worked at a magazine, my first project was organizing the logistics for an editorial. FYI, an editorial is a series of photos that depict a theme or tell a story. I was in charge of calling fashion houses and arranging for clothes to shoot. Usually this is free advertising for the designer, and tons of various designers upcoming seasons clothes, accessories, and shoes are called in to a magazine (borrowed for a week at the most!).

Always on the cheap

I know somethings have changed… but the models and photographers usually have a low charge (or no charge) to the magazine for appearing in an editorial.

Why? For the photos!

BTW I think that’s how most of us moms get into this, we really love the photos.

For the Model

The photos are more special than a regular catalog shoot. These photos were used to sell the portfolio of the model to the client for commercial work. Also the ability to work with famous photographer can be very tempting.

For the Photographer

Photographers get bigger and better commercial campaigns for editorial work.

Editorial work helps you get Commercial work

By commercial work I don’t mean TV commercials, I mean it strictly in the business sense like commerce=business, and business equals money. In a future post, I will also explain another use for the word commercial in modeling which is not as good.
