We decided last minute (2 days before the flight) to go back to the states for quick visit. So in midst of all the packing that needed to be done, I had so much new stuff to prepare due to Covid restrictions. I put together some helpful hints for all mom travellers so you can have less stress (than me!).
Who’s paranoid?
I feel like I’m trying to avoid Covid by slathering all over my body an invisible armor of alcohol. If I apply enough simultaneously yelling at my kids “don’t touch that!”, we will make it through the day #covidwarriors. Somehow I have on me like 5 hand sanitizers, although there are hand sanitizer dispensers every where.
If germs have you too all paranoid than I suggest for the flight you buy disposable kid masks and antibacterial wipes for the trays at your seat. Remember everyone (except 2 and under) will have to wear a mask the entire flight. Also you can bring your kids 1 prong headsets for long haul flights. This is essential anyways when you have kids because those cheapie ear buds don’t fit their ears.
Mom, I’m hungry!!!
There seems like it’s worse food than ever. Ok, I’m exaggerating but airport and airplane dining have also taken a hit. Plus you are encouraged to only remove your mask when you take a bite. When you chew they ask you put your mask over your mouth. The airport lounges all have different policies some no longer offers that buffet of drinks and small meals. All the food is put in takeaway and we weren’t even allowed to eat inside the lounge. However if you are paranoid (like me!) then you realize the lounge is more socially distanced then sitting outside in the boarding halls.
So my advice to you, bring your own food and snacks especially with kids. You can always buy food from the cafes and shops in the airport but the choices are not as great and more expensive. Remember no liquids over 100ml so don’t buy drinks to bring before security.
Covid Testing Hassle
Omg, what a headache. Check what are the guidelines upon the country you will travel to. Then if you are transiting also check the guidelines of that country’s airport.
Depends on the Country
Each country has different rules for when you should take Covid test before travel. You will need this negative Covid test document for checking in and receiving your boarding pass. Kids are not exempt from testing but some ages (under 2) do not need to test. Please check the the embassy online of your destination.
Test Types
Finally Covid Testing types, there are 3 types of tests, Antigen, Lamp, & PCR.
- PCR test is the most comprehensive of all Covid tests and are required usually by Asian countries to enter. The PCR test results take 24-48 hours for you to receive so plan accordingly especially since many countries you only have 72 hours from test to entering the country for the test to be valid.
- Lamp test is a swab up the nose and there is a rapid result (an hour). Many countries accept this test. It’s the test most business travelers use, and you can take it at the airport which makes this less stressful. Check your airport’s testing service online, then arrive to the airport an hour earlier than you would to check in to take the test.
- Antigen Test, it’s taken by blood and results are in 10 minutes. I’ve taken one before and I don’t think it’s accurate. Most countries do not accept this as valid test receipt.
What if you already had Covid or have the vaccine?
Most countries make you sign a declaration stating you are providing a Covid negative test, proof of Covid recovery in past 3-6 months (check the country), or vaccination record to enter. You must provide this documentation with the affidavit. Have all this information ready to hand to the boarding agent.
Quarantine
Be prepared to quarantine if the destination requires you to do so. Many countries may also request Covid tests after landing to avoid the quarantine.
Keep Calm
Just remember everyone on your flight had to test negative to actually get on the plane. Instead relax and try to sleep with your mask on.
