Camera vs Phone

Many people ask me about my photos.  I take pictures with DSLR camera and a complicated lense.  This allows me to manipulate a lot of more such as my background and light.  However I know many smart phones (such as iPhone) also have options and the ability to take great photos.  And honestly, I actually prefer taking video from my phone then from my camera.

Recipe for success

I do believe taking photos is sorta like recipe.  You need the correct light, white balance, aperture, and shutter speed. This is something that you have to learn over time and with lots of practice.  However if you want your photos to look better taken from your camera and phone, I would suggest Lightroom.  It’s the ultimate tool to make your photos look better. You can download the Adobe program on to your laptop Desktop photo editor | Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic or you can add Lightroom to your phone by finding the app on Google/App Store.  Get this you don’t have to buy expensive software anymore, instead you just pay a low monthly fee.  From Lightroom you can edit photos like professional photographers.  I know there are many ways apps that you can use, but too many of them make photos look unprofessional.

Bad editing

That said my aim is trying to take photos so I don’t have to edit them.  Couple of reasons why I use Lightroom is to make colours a little bit better (brighter or softer) and also to emphasize the person in my portraits.  To try to get your photos to the next level especially in social media, I have some recommendations for you.

social media style

I would say take a look around on Instagram and note how people are editing the photos.   I see that the more successful influencers and bloggers they usually have a colour theme, for instance a very light white overall affect is quite popular. Many people even sell their own set of presets.  Presets are like recipes for editing in Lightroom.  A preset is not necessarily just a filter, but an already set list of instructions. By pressing that one button in Lightroom it will get you that look you want instantly.

Quick Tips

  • Sharpening if you have a photo that’s a little bit blurry, if you want to make it look a little more focused you can use this tool.
  • Masking automatically makes a photo smoother and prettier, this is great for overall face wrinkles.
  • Do not overuse these tools ever, because in a small photo that appears on social media. It will look fine.  However if the photo gets bigger it will make your photo look heavily edited and fake.
