How 2020 started
This year has been really interesting for all of us. For our family it started off in China, my son and I were with a client we have known for several years. We left on January 15, when we left I thought we would back soon enough. There were tentative plans to go to Thailand in February, and my son was so excited to go. If you told me how the year would turn out then, I wouldn’t have believe you.
Covid has brought out the worst in humanity
Its absolutely shocking, what has happened since then. Around January 28, several kids in my sons class got sick. Everybody blamed us because we were in China. Please note, I’m also Korean and it’s a big part of my identity. I was born there and I was really raised like with a Korean mindset. So with my mentality, I feel most at home with Asians and in Asia. I felt like I was back in the 80’s again. The kids experienced racism and it was really something. I start realising the world hasn’t changed as much as I had thought it had and this pandemic could bring out the worst of humanity.
learning to appreciate
I am a city type of girl, so usually when we are moving from country to country we live in apartments. This time we actually took a house so we were so lucky that we had a garden area for the kids to play. I’ll tell you one thing I found during quarantine is that having siblings, these two children played together and entertained each other. They would leave me alone for hours. I had a lot of friends who had singles and that was really hard for them during this lockdown. For over 2 months, they didn’t see anyone else but each other.
moving forward
So that’s why we chose this premise for this minitorial. We thought about what would happen if they were the Last Kids on Earth. I am so lucky that I have two children close in age that play with each other and have the space to enjoy their lockdown. However I still have feelings of depression, but my best way to fight this noise in my head is to think of all the good I do have. We all went through so much this year, let’s try to move forward.
surviving 2020 in pictures
Think about if you were the last person on this earth. What would you have, what would you bring, what would you eat, and where would you sleep? So I asked the kids to envision this world. They did a great job! They told me that they would bring a Nerf gun to protect them. My son would bring his favourite soft toy. My daughter told me she eat Nutella straight from the bottle. Looking back on these photos will help to remind us of the good memories of 2020.
