Living in China there are many new year related customs and distinctive clothing. Their favourite dress is called the Qipao 旗袍 (pronounced CHI- POW, in Cantonese it is called a cheongsam). The origins of the qipao are from art deco cool 1920’s Shanghai.
Qipao
Once China removed it’s emperor, the cosmopolitan ladies of Shanghai started liberating themselves from traditional clothing. They adapted the qipao dress from androgynous men’s garment called the changpao. It’s a modern Chinese garment that’s close cut with frog button enclosures at the neck and some small slits on the side so that the wearer can easily move. The Qipao is a functional garment. One can wear this dress anywhere from formal events to even running errands preparing for the New Year.
Modern Style
In China during Spring Festival, it’s common to wear red. Red like their flag, it is the colour of good fortune. However some red clothing made with synthetic fabric can look gaudy. In a world class city like Shanghai there is more refinement. The dresses featured in Spring Festival are all handmade and one of a kind. They are made from original Liberty of London Fabrics, and the beautiful chinoiserie inspired shoes by Itsy Cotton are made in Spain. Both dresses and shoes are made from simple cotton all evoking a timeless elegance.
